Hard coal

Due to the high content of volatile substances, such coal quickly ignites and burns quickly. Coal of these grades is available and suitable for almost all types of boilers, but for complete combustion this coal must be supplied in small portions so that the released volatile substances have time to completely combine with atmospheric oxygen. Complete combustion of coal is characterized by a yellow flame and transparent smoke gases; incomplete combustion of volatile substances produces a crimson flame and black smoke.

Burning temperature of coal

Coal, the combustion temperature of which largely depends on its type and quality.
Coal is divided into 3 types: brown, hard and anthracite.

Brown coal contains impurities and is considered less useful in terms of heat output. Ignition occurs at 230-250°C. During combustion, the temperature reaches 1900°C.

Coal ignites at 400°C. The combustion temperature is 2100°C.

Anthracite is considered to be directly effective and high-quality. Ignition occurs at a temperature of -600°C and reaches the upper limit of -2250°C.

The caloric content of hard coal, depending on the grade, ranges from 6600 to 8750 calories.
Anthracite produces heat in the amount of 6700 kcal, but it is difficult to light, while brown coal produces from 2000 to 3100 kcal, ignites instantly, but burns quickly, not retaining heat.
Much of the efficient conversion of coal into heat depends on the furnace or boiler plant. Combustion in a furnace has a low efficiency, since more than half of the heat goes up the chimney. Using coal for combustion in a boiler, the efficiency is 70-75%.

D – with a long flame. The coal of the “D” brand is considered the most popular, suitable for use not only in boilers, but also for heating rooms using stoves. This fuel burns with a flame like firewood and retains heat for a long time. No extra air supply is required for ignition. It is often used for heating administrative buildings (schools, hospitals, kindergartens, etc.).
Coal brand T is lean: it burns without a flame. With a high carbon content (90%) and maximum heat output, it is suitable for forges, boiler houses and effectively heats residential premises. Mixed with anthracite, it is used in gas generators for the production of water gas. In housing and communal services, fuel grade T is used for heating mobile electrical installations and other objects.

The most popular and inexpensive fuel is considered to be coal of the DPK brand. Due to the content of 15% moisture, coal easily ignites and retains heat for a long time.

Buying coal is not difficult, but in order to use it as efficiently as possible, you need to know all the characteristics and understand the different brands.

The characteristics of coal depend largely on the place of its extraction, and the main differences are based on its properties:

  • Density ranges from 1.28 to 1.53 g
  • Carbon content ranges from 75 to 97%
  • Mechanical strength, the parameter of which should be (brown coal 40 kg/cm2, anthracite 300 kg/cm2
  • Volatile emissions from 2 to 35%
  • Moisture content from 4 to 15%
  • Ash yield from 2 to 30%
  • Specific heat of combustion from 6500 to 8600 kcal/kg.
